I am often asked if there is a ‘trial mouthguard’ that you can use to see if it works for you and feels comfortable. I totally understand why people ask this question. You can test drive a car, but you can’t ‘try before you buy’ one of my mouthguards. Why? Because I make bespoke custom-made mouthguards on a 3D scan of your teeth and jaws.
Trying a one size fits all mouthguard to ‘get a feel for the real thing’ will typically disappoint.
It is annoying that some companies sell ‘one-size-fits-all’ ‘boil-and-bite’ mouthguards over the internet and call them ‘custom-made’. This is so misleading and couldn’t be further from the truth. It is not ‘custom-made’ at all, but made from heating up and biting into big piece of plastic. The word ‘custom-made’ is quite misleading!
Many of my patients have wasted time and money on these thermoplastic products bought at the chemist or over the internet. They are often left disappointed at best. At worst, some patients have damaged their jaw joints or their bite. This damage can be permanent.
A lucky few did in fact have good results. This is a great ‘positive predictor’ for success with a Snoreology mouthguard. That is, if the D.I.Y. one worked for you, a Snoreology one will likely work for you too! (Whilst also being way more comfortable and effective).
However, if you have tried and failed a D.I.Y. mouthguard, that does not in any way correlate to a poor outcome with a genuine slim-line 3D dentist designed and printed device.
So don't waste your money on a thermoplastic
'practise' mouthguard!
